The Atlantic City Free Public Library said construction started at the main library on North Tennessee Avenue on Monday, Mar. 11. The HVAC replacement is expected to take about two months to complete.

The library, which opened in 1985, said it will try to stay open as much as possible during the project.

"The library asks for the public’s patience," the library said in a news release. "It is anticipated there will be increased noise inside the main library at times due to the ongoing work, and certain phases of the construction might require closing the Main Library temporarily."

Half of the HVAC project's cost is funded by the state's Library Construction Bond Act. Voters passed the LCBA in 2017, authorizing $125 million in state bonds for technology updates.

This is the main library's second project funded by the LCBA. In 2023, the library's concrete stairs and sidewalk were replaced. Interior lighting was also improved, public bathrooms were remodeled, and the exterior limestone façade was cleaned.

Millville contractor Gaudelli Brothers will perform the HVAC replacement.
